As part of the FamilyGenomics Research Team, and during my 4th year final research project, I had the pleasure of travelling to Backweston Science Campus, Celbridge on the 12th of February 2026 to visit the new Forensic Science Ireland (FSI) laboratory. During our visit, we met Dr. Ciarán Seoighe, Director General of FSI, who shared his infectious enthusiasm for his work. Dr. Charlotte Murphy graciously provided an overview of the highly specialised forensic analysis carried out at Backweston Science Campus, which includes physical, chemical and biological analysis.

The team were delighted to be allowed a tour of the laboratory and meet several other scientists who were equally enthusiastic about their job. We were exceptionally impressed with the state-of-the-art equipment and security measures employed at FSI. The team were particularly intrigued by the fingerprint analysis and many walked away considering a career in forensics.

This visit was inspiring, eye-opening and it was an honour to see the motto of “Science Supporting Justice” in action.
