The Family Genomics team travelled to the University of Galway on the 1st November 2025 to take part in My Moving Brain, a dynamic event showcasing cutting-edge brain research. As members of FutureNeuro, the SFI Research Centre for Translational Brain Science, we were delighted to share our work and connect with the public. These events celebrate and advocate for community connections, inclusivity in sport and the science of brain health.
Our group was represented by Professor Lorna Lopez, Postdoctoral Researcher Mailton Vasconcelos, PhD student Aung Myat Phyo and Research Assistant Holly Hughes. Together, we shared our research through interactive displays, hands-on demonstrations and conversations about how our genetics, sleep and behavioural patterns influence our health and wellbeing.

Visitors explored elements of our FamilySleeps project, with activity wristbands (Axivity) and non-invasive sleep sensors (Somnofy), and saliva collection kits used in our study, and how these tools help us to understand family sleep patterns.
Touca the Toucan also helped to start discussions on timing, medication routines and circadian rhythms in a playful and accessible way.
Attendees were also interested to take part in a chronotype quiz, build paper brain hats and chat about all things sleep and science.
This Galway My Moving Brain event brought together researchers, clinicians and advocacy groups to share experiences and ideas about brain health and inclusivity. The day was filled with creativity and community spirit, reminding us how important it is to connect research with real life experiences.
