Welcoming New Team Members to the FamilySleeps Research Project

familygenomics

This February, the Family Genomics team welcomed two new Research Assistants: Carina and Angeline. Carina and Angeline will be working on the FamilySleeps project, which aims to investigate whether there is a genetic basis for the link between autism and disrupted circadian rhythms. They will primarily be responsible for recruiting participants to the study.

Carina finished her MSc by Research in Psychology here at Maynooth University in Autumn of 2024 and her research to date has investigated the idea that intelligence, or intelligent behaviour, might be an acquired, and therefore malleable skill, rather than a fixed trait. Moreover, she has been volunteering with SOSAD Ireland, a suicide prevention and mental health service, since March 2022. There, she has acted as an agent, mentor, and coordinator for the messaging service. Before her Undergraduate degree, Carina completed a federal volunteer service in Hamburg, Germany. There, she worked with women with intellectual disabilities and their families.

Angeline received her BSc (Hons) in Biochemistry from University of Galway in 2024. After her degree, Angeline worked for Cell EXPLORERS – a science outreach programme that aims to provide hands-on science experience to young people and address common science-related misconceptions. Angeline supported the development of resources and online training modules that will help students and researchers in the Cell EXPLORERS national network in 13 different institutions in Ireland to deliver science outreach activities.

Carina and Angeline will start recruiting families for the FamilySleeps study at the end of March. If you are interested in participating in the study, please email family.sleeps@mu.ie to be added to the contact list. You can find out more about the study here.
